Can Dueling Pianos Keep a Wedding Dance Floor Going All Night Long?

One of the biggest questions couples ask us when considering dueling pianos for their wedding reception is pretty simple:
Will people dance?
The answer is a giant, resounding YES.
At Uptown Dueling Pianos, there’s nothing we love seeing more than a packed wedding dance floor. And at Amy and Zach’s wedding at The American Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, that’s exactly what we got.
Building the Soundtrack for a Charleston Wedding
We spent plenty of time preparing with Amy and Zach before their wedding day. They collected song requests from their guests, put together a list of songs they wanted to hear, and gave us a great picture of their musical tastes.
And their tastes were all over the map in the best possible way.
Their requests included classic rock like Boston’s “More Than a Feeling,” 2000s favorites like Lifehouse’s “You and Me,” country hits like Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried,” the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Can’t Stop,” and newer country like Ella Langley’s “Love Me Like You Do.”
It was an eclectic mix of classic rock, country, pop and alternative music spanning decades.
But as Tim went through their list, he noticed something important.
A lot of the traditional wedding reception dance-floor staples weren’t there.
Songs like “Fireball,” “Uptown Funk,” “Shout,” “Shut Up and Dance,” and “This Is How We Do It” weren’t necessarily the centerpiece of what Amy and Zach had requested.
And that was completely fine.
That’s where having an experienced wedding entertainment company matters.
Our job isn’t simply to work our way down a playlist. In fact, we don’t use playlists at all.
Our job is to take the music our couples love, combine it with requests from their guests, read the room in real time, and turn all of it into a wedding reception that feels like their party.
We work with our couples before the wedding to understand what they love, what they don’t want to hear, and the kind of reception they envision. Then, once the party starts, we use our experience performing hundreds of events to know when to stay with the requests, when to change gears, and when it’s time to drop something we know will fill the dance floor.
Because whether it’s a slow dance, a singalong, a classic-rock anthem, a country favorite or an all-out dance-floor banger, our goal is the same:
Keep people involved. Keep the energy up. Keep that dance floor packed.
And Then the Party Started
As guests began entering The American Theatre, they were greeted by everything from Hootie & the Blowfish to Stevie Wonder.
Heads were already bobbing. People were smiling. Drinks were in hand.
And this is where another part of what we can provide for a wedding reception came into play.
Not every musical moment has to be performed live.
For the wedding party entrance, Tim switched into DJ mode and fired up AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.”
Then it was time for Amy and Zach.
They made their entrance to “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project, best known to millions of sports fans as the legendary introduction music for the 1990s Chicago Bulls.
Again, DJ’d by Tim and timed for the entrance.
That ability to move between DJ services and live dueling pianos gives us another way to customize a wedding reception. Certain moments call for the original recording.
Others are perfect for a live band. We can use both to keep the reception moving without forcing every moment into the same format.
Once Amy and Zach were in the room, it was time for the live show.
We launched into “Piano Man,” with the room gathered together, swaying back and forth with drinks held high.
Then came “Southern Nights.”
And boom.
We had a party.
From Classic Rock to Taylor Swift to Hip-Hop
This is where a dueling pianos wedding reception gets really fun.
There is no predetermined setlist telling us where the night has to go.
We went from classics like “Old Time Rock and Roll,” “Sweet Caroline” and “I Will Survive” into modern wedding favorites and requests like “Shake It Off.”
We jumped into hip-hop with “Hot in Herre” and “Empire State of Mind.”
Country, rock, pop, hip-hop, singalongs, dance songs. Whatever kept Amy and Zach’s guests involved became part of the show.
And because this was our expanded dueling pianos wedding band with drums and guitar, we could move seamlessly between the intimacy and interaction of dueling pianos and the energy of a full live band.
But one of our favorite moments of the night wasn’t a huge dance anthem at all.
During the anniversary dance, we performed “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.”
The dance floor gradually cleared as the anniversary countdown worked its way through the years until we were left celebrating a couple who had been married for an incredible 63 years.
That’s what we love about weddings.
Five minutes earlier, the room can feel like a concert.
Five minutes later, you get a moment like that.
Then it’s right back to the party.
So, Can Dueling Pianos Keep People Dancing at a Wedding?
At the end of the night, Amy and Zach’s guests began making their way out of The American Theatre while we started wrapping cables, breaking down equipment and packing up the pianos.
The father of the bride came over and shook our hands.
Of everything he could have mentioned about the reception, he specifically told us how impressed he was by the dance floor and how we had kept everyone going all night.
About ten minutes later, Amy and Zach made a special trip back inside to find us.
They thanked us profusely and told us how happy they were with everything and that the reception had far exceeded their expectations.
For us, that was the perfect ending to the night.
So, can Uptown Dueling Pianos fill a dance floor at a wedding reception and keep people dancing all night long?
Absolutely.
Dueling pianos doesn’t mean your guests have to spend the reception sitting around a piano singing songs.
It can be a singalong.
It can be a rock show.
It can be a dance party.
It can become a full dueling pianos wedding band with drums and guitar.
And when the moment calls for the original recording instead of a live performance, we can incorporate DJ services into the reception as well.
Most importantly, the entertainment can change throughout the night depending on what your guests are responding to.
